Adopting senior pets is becoming increasingly important in Illinois, as animal shelters are often filled with older animals that potential adopters often overlook. According to recent statistics, senior cats make up a significant portion of the animals in shelters across the state and often have a more extended stay than their younger counterparts. To raise awareness about the benefits of adopting senior pets and to give a senior cat a second chance, Orphans of the Storm animal shelter in Riverwoods is hosting a birthday “paw-ty” for one of their long-stay cats, Capricorn.

Capricorn, a sweet and affectionate feline, has been living at the shelter for 530 days and is ready for adoption. During this special event on Saturday, January 28th, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (or anytime during Orphans of the Storm business hours), not only will Capricorn’s adoption fees be waived, but the fees of all his friends, who are defined as cats seven years of age and older or have been at the shelter for three months or longer, will also be waived. This is an opportunity for people to learn about the benefits of adopting senior pets and to help save a senior cat’s life by giving them a forever home.

Capricorn, described as “sweet, snuggly, affectionate, and ready to be the light of your life” by Isabel Mitchell, Adoption Counselor at OOTS, is among the many senior and long-stay cats that will be available for adoption during this event on Saturday, January 28th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (or anytime during Orphans of the Storm business hours). To help increase the chances of these cats finding their forever homes, adoption fees for Capricorn and his friends, who are defined as cats seven years of age and older or have been at the shelter for three months or longer, will be waived.

Many people often overlook senior pets when searching for a new companion, but these older animals can make just as loving and loyal pets as their younger counterparts. They often have a calm, laid-back personality and may already be trained and housebroken. Additionally, older pets often have a more settled and predictable personality, making them an excellent choice for families with young children or older adults.

It’s also important to note that when adopting a senior pet, you may give them a second chance at a happy life, as many of these animals may have surrendered due to a change in their previous owner’s circumstances. By providing them with a loving home, you give them the gift of a comfortable and happy life in their golden years.

In addition to the cat adoption event, OOTS will host fun activities such as a cat-themed gift basket raffle with a chance to win $100 in pet supplies. Staff and visitors will also celebrate Capricorn’s birthday with cat-themed treats and refreshments.

Adopting a senior pet is a great way to provide a loving home to an animal in need, but it also helps to make room for other animals at the shelter. Adopting a senior pet saves one life and opens up space for another animal to be saved. So, come and join the “paw-ty” and consider giving a senior pet a loving home.

Here at Omni dental of Arlington Heights, we understand the importance of adopting senior pets and are proud to support this cause.
