A Commitment to Homeland and Heritage

This September, I was privileged to attend the 11th extraordinary conference of the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa), held in Dohuk – Nohadra. As a dentist who has lived in the United States for many years, participating in this conference reminded me of the vital role of the Assyrian diaspora in our homeland’s narrative.

The Power of Diaspora Engagement

The conference theme, “Collective Leadership and Shared Responsibility to Face National Challenges and Prepare for National Entitlements,” was a profound call to action. It reminded us that although many of us have built lives away from our ancestral lands, our hearts continue to beat for our homeland. The conference was not just a gathering; it was a mobilization of ideas and resources aimed at the betterment of our Assyrian community.

The event brought together elected delegates from various regions, both within the homeland and the diaspora, reflecting the diverse experiences and perspectives that we, as a global community, bring to the table. Engaging with fellow Assyrians who contributed varied insights and strategies from their experiences abroad was incredibly enriching. This exchange is crucial as it infuses our community’s efforts with global perspectives, enhancing our collective approach to our challenges.

Unity and Historical Responsibility

Throughout the conference, discussions underscored the historical responsibility we share in shaping the future of our people. Whether through political engagement, cultural preservation, or economic support, the diaspora’s role is pivotal. For many of us living abroad, watching our homeland embrace development and overcome adversities is our ultimate wish.

The sessions emphasized the importance of solidarity and the impact of our collective efforts. We deliberated on strategies to harness the vast potential of our diaspora, to elevate our homeland, and ensure our cultural and political claims are not only heard but also respected and acted upon on the international stage.

Renewed Commitments and Looking Ahead

One of the most compelling aspects of the conference was the commitment to nurturing younger generations encouraging them to take active roles in our communal and political endeavors. This commitment to youth empowerment is essential for sustained progress and resilience.

As the conference concluded, the sense of responsibility was palpable. We left with renewed commitments to not only support our homeland from afar but to also engage directly and persistently. The resolve to bring about positive change and to see our homeland flourish was stronger than ever.

Closing Thoughts

The 11th extraordinary conference of the Assyrian Democratic Movement was more than an event; it was a reaffirmation of our shared identity and a clarion call to all Assyrians, especially those abroad, to contribute actively to the welfare and advancement of our people. Our hearts, wherever we may be, remain inexorably linked to our homeland, pulsating with hope and aspiration for its prosperity and growth.

As we continue our journeys abroad, may we carry with us the spirit of Dohuk—committed, connected, and ever hopeful for the future of Assyria.
