What is All on 4 Dental Implants?

All on 4 is a full arch tooth replacement concept that, like dentures, allows fully edentulous (without teeth) patients the ability to eat, speak, and appear as though they have a full set of natural teeth. As the name implies we support these permanent dentures with four dental implants per arch – that’s four implants on the top arch and four implants on the bottom arch of your mouth. A total of only eight dental implants allows you to regain control over what you eat and effects your quality of life.
All-on-Four builds on the same technology associated with traditional dental implants. The foundation of the treatment is the osseointegration process in which the jaw bone bonds with the surface of the dental implant, leaving the implant as a permanent fixture in the mouth.

The two outer dental implants in All-on-Four are inserted slightly differently than standard implants, however. They are angled underneath the gumline so as to provide the most posterior support possible for the rear teeth in the prosthetic arch.

How All-On-4 Dental Implants Works

With the All-on-4 implant procedure, only four implants are used to support a full set of replacement teeth. They will use high-tech diagnostics to determine areas in the jaw where there is adequate bone volume and density for the implants to be inserted. The implants are often angled for maximum stability. This allows them to hold replacement teeth firmly in place.

Difference Between All-On-4 & Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants are applied through a dental treatment that requires a minimum of two oral surgeries. During an initial procedure, the implants themselves (which are small titanium screws) will be inserted into the jawbone. Once the implants are in place, the jaw will need time to heal and the implant will need time to integrate with the jawbone so that it can act as a tooth root. This healing time typically takes between three and six months.

After healing is complete, a second surgery will be required in order to attach an abutment (a small piece of metal that protrudes from the gum line) to the dental implant. This abutment will be the piece that attaches to the dental restoration. Good candidates for traditional dental implants include patients with the following characteristics:

  • Those with substantial bone density to support the implant
  • Those with individual missing teeth or groups of missing teeth
  • Those who will be restoring the teeth with porcelain crowns or bridges

All-on-4® Implants

All-on-4® implants utilize a set of four dental implants to act as anchors for a set of partial or full permanent dentures. Unlike traditional dental implants which require multiple procedures and a lengthy healing time, All-on-4® implants treatment can often be completed in a single dental appointment, with patients able to return home with their implants and a full set of restorations. While there are many benefits to All-on-4® implants, not all patients are good candidates for this procedure. Ideal candidates for All-on-4® implants include the following patients:

  • Patients who need to replace an entire arch or entire set of teeth
  • Current denture wearers who are dissatisfied with the fit of dentures or the upkeep that is required
  • Patients who lack the bone density to support a large number of traditional dental implants
