What is bonding to teeth, and how does it work?
Bonding to teeth means adding a putty like composite resin to the tooth surface, shaping it by hand and hardening it with a curing light. The material attaches to the enamel and becomes part of the tooth’s outer shape.
Because resin is added rather than removed, the bonding dental procedure typically needs little or no drilling.

Do I need dental bonding?
Bonding on teeth works well for small to moderate changes in appearance. It is often the simplest way to improve one or a few teeth.
- Chipped or cracked edges on front teeth.
- Small gaps, such as a space between the two front teeth.
- Stains or dark spots that whitening does not lift.
- Short, worn or uneven teeth that need a little more length or a better shape.
- Exposed root surfaces near the gumline that feel sensitive.
The same composite material is used for tooth colored fillings, so it can also restore a small cavity.

Who is not a candidate for bonding?
Bonding may not be the right choice in a few situations. Dr. Poles will tell you if another option will serve you better.
- The tooth is badly broken or heavily filled. A crown protects it better.
- You want a large color change on many teeth. Whitening or veneers usually hold color longer.
- You grind heavily. Resin can chip under strong forces, so a night guard or stronger material may be needed.
- Your teeth or gums need care first. Decay and gum disease are treated before cosmetic work.
How does bonding compare with veneers and crowns?
All of these options can improve how a tooth looks. They differ in how much tooth changes and how much of it is covered.
| Option | What it covers | Tooth removed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonding | One small area | Little or none | A chip, gap or stain |
| Resin veneer | Whole front surface | Little or none | Several uneven teeth |
| Porcelain veneer | Whole front surface | Thin layer of enamel | Lasting change in color and shape |
| Crown | The whole tooth | Shaped all around | Cracked or weak teeth |
When you want to change several teeth, resin veneers or lab made porcelain may suit you better. For a weak or cracked tooth, a crown adds strength that resin cannot.

What happens during the bonding dental procedure?
The four steps, from shade matching to polishing, are shown in the visit guide on this page. When many teeth are involved, the work may be split across visits.

How is the shade matched so it blends in?
Good bonding is invisible, so shade and shape matter as much as the material. Dr. Poles looks at the color, translucency and edges of the teeth beside the repair before he starts.
If you also want whiter teeth, whiten first. Resin does not change color with whitening, so your bonding is matched to the new shade afterward.

How many years does dental bonding last?
Bonding can last for years with good care, but it is not as durable as porcelain. How long yours lasts depends on where the tooth is, how you bite and your habits.
Resin is softer than enamel and stains more easily than porcelain. Small chips or dull areas can usually be repaired or polished without redoing the whole tooth.
- Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily.
- Limit coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, especially in the first days.
- Do not bite nails, pens, ice or hard candy with the repaired teeth.
- Ask about a night guard if you clench at night.
- Keep regular cleanings so the resin can be checked and polished.

What affects the cost of bonding?
The cost depends on how many teeth are treated and the size of each repair. Cosmetic bonding may or may not be covered, while bonding that repairs damage or decay is more often treated as a restorative service.
Omni Dental accepts most major dental plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. Your coverage depends on your own plan.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833Does bonding hurt?
Most bonding is comfortable because little or no tooth is removed, and many small repairs need no numbing at all. If the repair is near a nerve or includes a cavity, the tooth can be numbed first. Mild sensitivity for a day or two is possible.
How long does a bonding appointment take?
Many small repairs fit into a single visit, and several teeth can often be treated in the same appointment. The time depends on the size and number of repairs. You can usually eat and return to your normal day right afterward.
Can bonding be whitened?
No. Whitening gel does not lighten composite resin, which is why whitening comes before new bonding. If older bonding no longer matches your teeth, it can often be polished, or replaced so it blends in again.
Is bonding better than veneers?
Neither is right for everyone. Bonding is quicker, removes little or no tooth and suits small changes. Porcelain veneers resist stains better and suit larger changes across several teeth, but they usually need some enamel reshaped. Dr. Poles helps you weigh both for your goals.
Can bonding fix a gap between front teeth?
Often, yes, if the gap is small. Resin is added to the sides of the teeth to narrow or close the space. Larger gaps or gaps caused by bite problems may be better treated with aligners or another option, which Dr. Poles can explain.
