Is a family dentist the same as a general dentist?
Yes. A family dentist is a general dentist who sees patients of every age. The training is the same; only the age range of patients is wider.
For you, that means one dental office and one set of records for the whole family, instead of driving to three offices.
What does family dentistry at Omni Dental include?
Most care falls into four groups. Here is how they compare.
| Type of care | What it covers | When it comes up |
|---|---|---|
| Prevention | Exams, cleanings, dental X-rays when needed | Usually every six months |
| Repair | Fillings, crowns, bonding, root canals, gum care | A cavity, crack or infection |
| Replacement | Extractions, dental bridges, dentures, implants | A tooth can’t be saved or is missing |
| Cosmetic | Teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, Invisalign | You want to change how your smile looks |
Dr. Poles also places and restores implants. So a family that needs both routine care and tooth replacement can stay with one office.

What happens at a checkup and cleaning?
Checkups find problems while they are small and easier to fix. A cavity found early often needs a simple filling. Left untreated, the same cavity can reach the nerve and need a root canal.
At a typical checkup, Dr. Poles looks at:
- Teeth: new decay, worn or cracked fillings, and signs of grinding.
- Gums: bleeding, pocket depth and early signs of gum disease.
- Bite and jaw: how your teeth meet, and any clicking or soreness.
- Soft tissues: your tongue, cheeks and throat, checked for anything unusual.
Then comes the cleaning, which removes tartar your brush can’t reach. See what a professional cleaning includes.

Dental care for children, teens, adults and seniors
Each stage of life brings its own questions. Good dental care in Arlington Heights should adjust to the person in the chair.
- Children: gentle first visits, cleanings, cavity checks and tips for brushing at home.
- Teens: cavity prevention, wisdom teeth checks and questions about braces or Invisalign.
- Adults: tooth-colored fillings, crowns, gum care and questions about teeth whitening.
- Seniors: dry mouth, worn teeth, older fillings, dentures and options for missing teeth.

What if someone needs more than a cleaning?
Many repairs happen right here. Dr. Poles handles fillings, crowns, root canals and tooth extractions, a common form of oral surgery.
He also checks wisdom teeth at regular exams and explains whether removal makes sense for you.
For missing teeth, you can explore implant options at the same office that keeps your records. For gum disease, Dr. Poles holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Laser Surgery.
Want a brighter or more even smile? Our cosmetic dentistry covers whitening, bonding and veneers, planned around your natural teeth.

Common family dental problems and what to do first
Some issues come up in almost every household. Here is how to handle them until you can be seen.
- Sensitive teeth: use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and mention it at your visit.
- Bleeding gums: keep brushing and flossing gently. Bleeding that lasts more than a week or two is a reason to book.
- A chipped tooth: save any piece you find and call. Small chips are often fixed with bonding.
- A lost filling: keep the area clean and chew on the other side. Call before the tooth breaks down further.
- A knocked-out baby tooth: do not put it back. Call so Dr. Poles can check the area.
Swelling of the face, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing needs urgent medical care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Snoring, sleep and your teeth
Your dentist may be the first to spot signs of a sleep problem, such as teeth worn down by grinding. Omni Dental offers sleep apnea treatment and snoring care. A physician diagnoses sleep apnea, so mention loud snoring to your doctor and to us.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How often should my family see the dentist?
Many people do well with a checkup and cleaning every six months. Some patients, such as those with gum disease or frequent cavities, may need visits more often. Dr. Poles sets the interval for each family member based on what he sees.
Do you see young children?
Yes. Children are welcome for checkups, cleanings and general care. Omni Dental is a general and family practice, not a pediatric specialty office. If your child needs care outside general dentistry, Dr. Poles will explain that at the visit.
At what age should my child first visit the dentist?
Many dentists suggest a first visit around the first birthday, or when the first teeth come in. Early visits are short and gentle. They help children get used to the chair before any treatment is ever needed.
Can you schedule several family members together?
Ask the front desk at (847) 483-8833 whether times are open for several family members in one block. Booking siblings, or a parent and child, together can save you a second trip during the week.
What should I bring to our first visit?
Bring a photo ID, your dental insurance card, a list of medicines each person takes, and any recent X-rays from a previous dentist. Write down your questions in advance so nothing gets missed during the visit.
