What exactly are snap-in dentures, and how do they work?
A traditional denture rests on your gums and relies on suction or adhesive. A snap-in denture has small attachments on its underside that click onto matching parts on implants in your jaw.
The implants act as anchors. Once they heal in the bone, the denture snaps on firmly. You press it free when you want to clean it.

Two designs: stud attachments and a bar
Removable snap on dentures come in two common designs:
- Stud style. Each implant has a small cap, and the denture holds a matching clip with a replaceable nylon liner. This is the most common design.
- Bar style. A thin metal bar joins the implants, and the denture clips onto the bar. It spreads the load and can feel very secure.
Dr. Poles explains which design suits your jaw, your bite and how easy each is to clean.

How many implants does a snap-in denture need?
The lower jaw often does well with two implants. The upper jaw usually needs more because its bone is softer.
The number also depends on how much bone you have and whether you want the roof of your mouth left open. Your X-rays show what your bone can support.

Palateless snap-on dentures for the upper jaw
A regular upper denture covers the roof of your mouth to create suction. Many wearers dislike how that dulls taste and temperature, and some gag.
With enough implants supporting it, an upper denture can be made without that palate section. Palateless snap-on dentures leave the roof of your mouth open, which many people find more comfortable.

Partial snap on dentures
You do not need to be missing every tooth to benefit. An implant retained partial denture uses one or more implants to steady a partial that would otherwise hang on metal clasps.
Partial snap on dentures can reduce rocking and take pressure off your natural teeth. In some cases they also avoid visible clasps.
Dr. Poles checks the health of your remaining teeth before suggesting one.

Eating with snap in dentures
Better eating is the main reason most people choose this option. Because the denture is anchored, you can usually bite and chew with more confidence.
- Early on, you eat soft foods while the implants heal and you get used to the denture.
- After healing, most people return to a wider range of foods, including many they avoided before.
- Still take care with very hard, sticky or chewy foods, which can wear the attachments.
Snap-in dentures vs regular dentures vs a fixed bridge
Each option has a place. The right choice depends on your bone, budget and how you want your teeth to feel.
| Option | Hold | Surgery | Cleaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular denture | Suction or adhesive, can slip | None | Remove, brush and soak |
| Snap-in denture | Clips onto implants, firm | Yes, often two to four implants | Remove to clean, liners replaced over time |
| Fixed implant bridge | Fixed, does not come out | Yes, usually more implants | Brush and clean under the bridge |
If you would rather never take your teeth out, read about a fixed All-on-4 bridge. To compare every removable option, see all of our denture options.

Can you sleep in implant-supported dentures?
Taking a snap-in denture out at night is usually recommended. That gives your gums a rest and lets you clean the denture and the implant attachments properly.
Dr. Poles gives you care instructions for your case, including how to clean around each implant at the gum line.

Common problems with snap-in dentures
Knowing the common problems with snap-in dentures upfront helps you plan for upkeep.
- Worn liners. The clip liners lose grip with daily use and need replacing. This is routine.
- Food trapping. Food can collect under the denture. Removing and rinsing it after meals helps.
- Sore spots. As the gums change, the fit can shift. A reline or adjustment usually fixes this.
- Gum inflammation around an implant. Daily cleaning helps prevent it. Left untreated, it can threaten the implant.
- Bone changes. The jaw can still change in areas without implants, so checkups matter.
What to expect, step by step
- 01 Consultation. An exam and X-rays show your bone and gum health. You discuss the design, the number of implants and whether your denture can be adapted.
- 02 Implant placement. The implants are placed with the area numbed. You usually wear a temporary or adjusted denture while they heal.
- 03 Healing. The implants fuse with the bone over a few months.
- 04 Attaching the denture. The attachments are connected, the denture is fitted, and your bite is checked.
- 05 Upkeep. Regular checkups, liner changes and relines keep the denture fitting well.

What sets the price of a snap-in denture?
The total depends on the number of implants, stud or bar attachments, a new or converted denture, and any extractions. Our guide to what dentures cost covers each denture type, and you can ask for a written estimate after your exam.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833Can my current denture be converted to a snap-in denture?
Sometimes. If your denture fits well and is in good condition, attachments can occasionally be added to it after the implants heal. Many patients need a new denture for a good fit. Dr. Poles checks your current denture at your consultation and explains both routes.
How often do the attachments need replacing?
The nylon liners inside the clips wear with daily use, so they are replaced from time to time as routine care. How often depends on how you use the denture and how it fits. Bringing it to regular checkups lets wear be caught before the denture feels loose.
Does insurance cover implant-supported dentures?
Some plans pay toward the denture itself, extractions or X-rays, while the implants may or may not be covered. Annual maximums apply. Omni Dental accepts most major dental plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. Bring your insurance card and ask our front desk what your plan covers.
Will a snap-in denture change how I speak?
Most people find speech easier once the denture stops moving. There is still a short adjustment period with any new denture, and some sounds may feel different at first. Reading aloud at home for a few days often helps your tongue and lips adapt.
What are mini implants for dentures?
Mini implants are narrower posts that are sometimes used to steady a denture, often when bone is limited. They are a general option in dentistry, and Dr. Poles may or may not recommend them for you. Your bone, bite and denture type decide which implant design fits best.
What if I still have a few teeth left?
You have two main paths. Healthy teeth can sometimes stay, with an implant retained partial denture filling the gaps. If the remaining teeth are failing, they can be removed and a full implant denture planned instead. Your X-rays and gum health guide that choice.
