Full arch vs full mouth: what is the difference?
People often use the two terms for the same thing. The difference is how much of your mouth is treated.
- Full arch implants replace every tooth in one jaw, upper or lower. Full arch implant treatment may be all you need if the other jaw still has healthy teeth.
- Full mouth implants replace the teeth in both jaws. That means two full arches, planned as one smile.
The All-on-4 design is one way to support a full arch. Other designs use more implants per jaw, depending on your bone.

Why both arches are planned together
Your upper and lower teeth work as a pair. If they are planned separately, the bite, the smile line and even your speech can feel off.
When Dr. Poles plans a whole mouth, he starts from the finished smile and works backward. That plan covers:
- Bite height. How far your jaws close affects chewing, jaw comfort and the look of your lower face.
- Tooth shape and shade. Both arches are matched so the teeth look like one set.
- Lip and cheek support. Full arch teeth replace some lost gum as well, which helps support your face.
- Speech. The position of the front teeth affects sounds like “s” and “f.”
Fixed or removable teeth for each jaw?
You do not have to choose the same option for both jaws. Many people mix them based on bone, budget and how they want each arch to feel.
| Option | How it holds | Daily care | Often chosen when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed full arch bridge | Screwed onto implants | Brush and clean under the bridge | You want teeth you do not take out |
| Implant denture | Clips onto implants | Remove to clean, clips replaced over time | Bone is limited or you prefer removable |
| Mix of both | Fixed on one jaw, clip-on on the other | Some of each | One jaw has less bone than the other |
A removable option is sometimes called full mouth denture implants. Read how implant dentures that clip in work if you are weighing that route.

Are full mouth dental implants a good idea?
For the right patient, they can be. Whole mouth implants usually let you bite and chew more firmly, and the teeth are steadier when you talk. Implants also keep the jawbone working, which a regular denture cannot do.
They are a bigger commitment than dentures, so weigh both sides:
- Benefits: steadier teeth, stronger chewing for many people, usually no adhesive, and a natural look, especially with fixed bridges.
- Considerations: oral surgery, several months of healing, a higher upfront cost, and daily cleaning around the implants.
A good candidate is healthy enough for oral surgery and has enough bone, or can have it built up. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications can slow healing, so share your full health history.

Should you treat one arch now and the other later?
Some people start with the jaw that bothers them most. Often that is a lower denture that will not stay in place.
Treating one arch first spreads out the time and cost. Treating both together means one planning stage and one main healing period.
Either way, Dr. Poles plans both arches at the start, so the second arch fits the first when you are ready.
How treatment works across both arches
- 01 Consultation and records. An exam, X-rays and photos, plus a talk about what bothers you and what you want to change.
- 02 Treatment plan. The number of implants per arch, fixed or removable teeth, and the order of treatment. You can ask for a written estimate.
- 03 Preparing the mouth. Removing teeth that cannot be saved and treating gum disease come first or happen during surgery.
- 04 Implant placement. Implants are placed with the areas numbed. Temporary teeth are fitted when your case allows.
- 05 Healing. The bone bonds with the implants. You start with soft foods.
- 06 Final teeth. Your final bridges or dentures are made, fitted and adjusted so both arches meet correctly.

How painful is a full mouth dental implant procedure?
The treated areas are numb during surgery. Most patients describe pressure and vibration rather than sharp pain.
Soreness and swelling are normal for the first days afterward, as with any oral surgery.
Dr. Poles gives you instructions for your case on comfort, food and cleaning. If something feels unexpected while you heal, call us.

How much does a whole mouth of implants cost?
The total depends on the number of implants, fixed or removable teeth, materials, and any extractions or grafting. A full set of dental implants is two arches, so each arch is priced in your estimate.
Advertised full arch prices vary widely. When you compare, check that each quote includes temporary teeth, final teeth, extractions and follow-up visits. Our guide to implant pricing lists the questions to ask.

Your options
Full mouth implant options for each jaw
Each arch can be planned on its own terms. These are the main choices.
Fixed Full Arch Bridge

All-on-4 Implants
A fixed arch on four implants, often planned to make the most of the bone you have.
Implant-Supported Dentures
A denture that clips onto implants. You remove it to clean, and it holds more firmly than a regular denture.
Upper and Lower Mix
A fixed bridge on one jaw and a snap in denture on the other, chosen around your bone and budget.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How many implants does a full mouth need?
Most full arches rest on a small number of implants per jaw, not one implant for every missing tooth. The number depends on your bone, whether the teeth are fixed or removable, and your bite. Dr. Poles explains how many your plan needs after your exam and X-rays.
Can I keep some of my own teeth?
Sometimes. If one jaw still has healthy teeth, you may only need a full arch in the other jaw, or a smaller implant bridge. Dr. Poles checks every remaining tooth on your X-rays and only suggests removing teeth that cannot be kept healthy.
Will I have teeth while my implants heal?
In most cases, yes. A temporary fixed bridge is fitted when your implants are stable enough, or you wear a temporary denture. Your final teeth are made after the implants have bonded with the bone.
Does dental insurance cover full mouth implants?
Few plans cover a full mouth case in full. Many pay toward parts of it, such as extractions, X-rays or the denture portion, up to an annual maximum. Omni Dental accepts most major plans. Bring your insurance card and ask our front desk what yours may pay before you commit.
How long does full mouth treatment take from start to finish?
Most cases take several months, because the bone needs time to bond with the implants before final teeth are made. Extractions, gum treatment or bone grafting can add time. Treating one arch before the other also stretches the timeline, by choice.
