The four stages are shown in the step guide on this page. Two details help you plan around work, school and family:
- Care comes first. Any cavities or gum problems are treated before aligners start.
- Attachments. Some patients need small tooth colored bumps, called attachments, that help the aligners grip certain teeth. They are placed at the fitting visit.
How long does Invisalign take?
Treatment time depends on how far your teeth need to move. It is usually measured in months, and milder cases tend to finish sooner than fuller ones. You get an estimated timeline at your consultation.
The biggest factor you control is wear time. Aligners left on the nightstand do not move teeth, so missed hours stretch the process.
What is daily life with aligners like?
Many people settle into the routine fairly quickly.
- Wear time: keep your aligners in for most of the day and night, taking them out only to eat, drink and clean.
- Meals: many dentists suggest keeping each meal break to around 30 minutes.
- Drinks: plain water is fine with aligners in. Take them out for coffee, tea, soda or anything with sugar or color.
- Cleaning: brush your teeth before putting aligners back in, and gently clean the aligners each day with cool water. Hot water can warp them.
- Speech: a slight lisp is common for the first few days and usually fades.
- Retainers: teeth tend to drift after any orthodontic treatment, so wear retainers as directed.

Why don't some dentists recommend Invisalign?
Aligners are not right for every mouth. Severe bite problems, large rotations or poor wear habits can lead to slower or less complete results, and fixed braces may suit those cases better. A careful exam is how Dr. Poles decides whether to recommend Invisalign or another option.
Does Invisalign hurt?
