What is a tooth crown?
A tooth crown is a tooth-shaped cover that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth, down to the gumline. It takes the biting load, so the weak tooth underneath does not crack further.
People often call it a cap. The goal is the same either way: keep your natural root in place and give you a tooth that chews, looks and feels normal again.

When do you need a crown on a tooth?
You may need a crown when a filling can no longer hold a tooth together. Dr. Poles looks at how much healthy tooth is left, where it sits and how hard you bite.
Common reasons for crowns:
- A cracked or broken tooth that would keep splitting without full coverage.
- A large old filling with little natural tooth left around it.
- A tooth treated after a root canal, especially a back tooth.
- Worn teeth from grinding that have lost height and shape.
- Missing teeth, where a crown sits on an implant or forms part of a bridge.
- A cosmetic concern, such as a badly stained or misshapen tooth.
A crown is not always the answer. If enough healthy tooth remains, a filling, bonding or an onlay may protect it with less drilling.
Dr. Poles will tell you when a smaller repair makes more sense.
What type of tooth crown is the strongest?
The best crown is the one that fits the tooth’s job. A front tooth needs a natural look. A back molar needs strength against heavy chewing.
| Material | Look | Strength | Often used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain or all-ceramic | Most natural | Good | Front teeth, visible areas |
| Zirconia | Tooth-colored | Very high | Back teeth, people who grind |
| Porcelain fused to metal | Tooth-colored surface | High | Teeth needing both look and strength |
| Gold or metal alloy | Metal color | Very high | Back teeth out of view |
Dr. Poles tells you which he recommends for your tooth and why. He weighs appearance, strength, how much tooth must be shaped, and how the crown meets the teeth it bites against.

What are the steps in the dental crown procedure?
A traditional crown usually takes two visits. The four steps are shown in the crown guide on this page. Between visits, you wear a temporary while a dental lab makes your final crown to Dr. Poles’ plan, and he then fits and adjusts it.
Some people ask if a crown can be made in one appointment. Our guide to single-visit crowns explains how that works and who it may suit.

How to make your crown last
With good care, a crown can serve you for many years. How long yours lasts depends on the material, the tooth underneath, your bite and your habits at home.
- Brush twice a day and clean where the crown meets the gum.
- Wear a night guard if you grind or clench.
- Avoid chewing ice, pens or very hard candy.
- Keep regular checkups so problems at the crown edge are caught early.

Crowns that restore your smile, not just your bite
On front teeth, a crown is as much about looks as strength. Dr. Poles chooses the shade and shape with you, so the crown blends with the teeth beside it.
He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). If several front teeth need work, he can plan them together, so your smile looks even and balanced.

Your options
Which crown material suits your tooth?
Each crown material has strengths. Dr. Poles tells you which he recommends for your tooth.
Porcelain and all-ceramic crowns
The most natural look and translucency. A common choice for front teeth and any tooth that shows when you smile.
Zirconia crowns
Tooth colored and very strong. Well suited to back teeth, heavy chewing and people who grind.
Porcelain fused to metal
A ceramic surface over a metal base. A durable option where strength matters as much as appearance.
Crowns on implants
A crown that sits on a dental implant to replace a missing tooth, planned together with the implant itself.

Step by step
How does getting a crown work?
- 1
Exam and X-rays
Dr. Poles checks the tooth, root and gums and explains whether a crown is the right repair.
- 2
Shape the tooth
The tooth is numbed and reshaped, with a core buildup first if a lot of tooth is missing.
- 3
Impressions and temporary
Your tooth is recorded for the crown, and a temporary crown protects it in the meantime.
- 4
Fit and bite check
The final crown is checked for fit, shade and bite, then cemented so you can chew normally.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833Is it painful to get a crown put on a tooth?
The tooth is numbed before it is shaped, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days afterward is common. Dr. Poles gives you aftercare steps and tells you what to do if it lasts.
Are ceramic dental crowns good?
For many teeth, yes. Ceramic and porcelain crowns give the most natural look, which is why they are common on front teeth. On back teeth or for people who grind, a stronger material such as zirconia may be the better fit.
What is a tooth crown specialist called?
The specialist is a prosthodontist, a dentist with extra training in crowns, bridges and dentures. Most crowns are placed by general dentists. Dr. Poles is a general dentist and a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry.
How much is a full mouth of crowns?
It depends on how many teeth need crowns, the materials, any prep work such as buildups or root canals, and your insurance. Full-mouth work is planned tooth by tooth, so ask for a written plan and estimate after your exam.
Can I eat normally with a temporary crown?
You can eat, but be gentle. Avoid sticky foods like caramel and gum, and chew on the other side when you can. When you floss, slide the floss out to the side instead of pulling it up, so the temporary stays in place.
Will my crown match my other teeth?
Tooth-colored crowns are shaded to blend with the teeth around them. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, because crowns do not change color with whitening. The shade is checked against your neighboring teeth first.
