About the dentist: Dr. Bilus D PolesDDS,MAGD,DICOI, DIDIA

A one-visit crown is designed, made and fitted in a single appointment, so you skip the temporary and the second visit. It needs an in-office milling unit and can suit a cracked or worn tooth with healthy roots and gums. Ask our office whether a one-visit crown is available for your tooth; at your exam, Dr. Bilus D Poles DDS,MAGD,DICOI, DIDIA, explains which approach fits.

How do single-visit crowns work: Omni Dental, Arlington Heights, IL

How do single-visit crowns work?

One-day dental crowns aim to finish the whole crown process in one sitting. With a traditional crown, a lab makes the crown over a few weeks while you wear a temporary.

With a single-visit crown, digital technology does the lab’s job in the office. A scan records the shaped tooth, software helps create the design, and a milling machine shapes the crown from a solid ceramic block.

The crown is then adjusted, checked against your bite and bonded in place. The visit is longer than a normal crown visit, often a few hours, because the design and milling happen while you wait.

Who may qualify for a single-visit crown (dental crowns), Arlington Heights, IL

Who may qualify for a single-visit crown?

A one-visit crown works best for straightforward cases. Dr. Poles looks at the tooth, the X-rays and your bite first.

You may be a good fit if:

  • One or two teeth need crowns and the roots and gums are healthy.
  • The tooth has enough structure left to support a ceramic crown.
  • Your bite is stable, without heavy grinding.
  • The tooth is a natural tooth, not an implant that needs custom parts.

A two-visit crown may be the better choice if:

  • The tooth needs a root canal or gum treatment first and has to heal.
  • You need several crowns at once, where shade and shape must match across many teeth.
  • A front tooth needs hand-layered porcelain for the most lifelike color.
  • You grind or clench heavily, which may call for a stronger material.

Is a crown in a day the same as a two-visit crown?

Both approaches can give you a well-fitting, natural-looking crown. The difference is how the crown is made.

FactorOne-visit crownTraditional lab crown
AppointmentsOne longer visitTwo shorter visits, weeks apart
Temporary crownNoneWorn between visits
MaterialsSolid ceramic blockWide range, including gold
Custom shadingStained in the officeHand-layered by a lab technician

Neither option is right for every tooth. Advanced equipment does not replace judgment, so Dr. Poles explains which crown approach suits your tooth.

The steps of a single-visit crown restoration

Here is how a one-appointment crown generally works at offices that provide it:

With a traditional crown, steps 1 and 2 are the same. Then the lab makes your crown, and you return to have it fitted.

  1. 1 Exam and numbing. The tooth is checked, X-rays confirm the root is healthy, and the area is numbed.
  2. 2 Shaping the tooth. Old filling material and decay are removed, and the tooth is shaped.
  3. 3 Scanning. The prepared tooth is scanned so the crown matches your bite and the teeth beside it.
  4. 4 Design and milling. The crown is designed and milled from a ceramic block while you wait.
  5. 5 Fitting. The crown is tried in, adjusted for bite and shade, polished and bonded in place.
Can a crown replacement be done in one visit at Omni Dental in Arlington Heights, IL

Can a crown replacement be done in one visit?

An old crown that is cracked, chipped or leaking at the edge can sometimes be replaced in one visit. It depends on what is found under the old crown.

If the tooth is sound, the steps are the same as a new crown. If it needs more repair, a root canal or time to heal, a two-visit plan is the safer route.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.

Call (847) 483-8833

Is it painful to get a crown put on a tooth?

The tooth is numbed before it is shaped, for a one-visit or a traditional crown, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterward is common. Dr. Poles gives you aftercare steps for your tooth.

Can I get a temporary tooth while waiting for a crown?

Yes. With a traditional crown, you wear a temporary crown between visits. It protects the shaped tooth and lets you chew and smile normally. Avoid sticky foods, and slide floss out to the side so the temporary stays put.

What is the least expensive dental crown?

Crown cost depends on the material, any work the tooth needs first, and your insurance, not on speed alone. The cheapest option is not always the best value for a tooth that takes heavy chewing. Ask for a written estimate after your exam.

Are crowns made in one visit as strong as lab crowns?

A well-fitted ceramic crown made in one visit can be durable for many patients. Lab crowns offer more material choices, such as hand-layered porcelain, porcelain fused to metal and gold. The right material depends on the tooth, your bite and whether you grind.

Can an old crown be replaced in one visit?

Sometimes. Once the old crown comes off, the tooth underneath is checked for decay or cracks. If it is sound, a one-visit crown may be possible. If it needs more repair or time to heal, a two-visit plan is the safer choice.
