Can Palatine patients get dentures the day teeth come out?
An immediate denture is one option. Dr. Poles tells you at your consultation whether it fits your mouth and health.
It is made in advance and placed at the same visit your teeth are removed, so you leave with teeth instead of a gap.
The catch is that your gums shrink as they heal over the following months. An immediate denture loosens as that happens, so it needs a reline or a new denture later.
Read more about having teeth removed and how healing works.
Immediate or conventional dentures: how they compare
| Immediate denture | Conventional denture | |
|---|---|---|
| When it goes in | The day of your extractions | After the gums heal, often a few weeks to a few months later |
| Time without teeth | None | Weeks to months in that area |
| Fit at first | Changes as you heal | More stable from the start |
| Extra steps | Adjustments and a reline or refit | Fewer adjustments |
An implant denture can follow either path once the implants have healed. It clicks onto posts for a steadier hold, and you can read how an implant-held denture works.
Is your old denture due for a refit or a replacement?
Dentures that fit well years ago can drift out of fit as the jaw changes. Watch for these signs:
A reline reshapes the inside of the denture to match your gums now. If the teeth are badly worn or the base is cracked, a new denture is often the better choice. Bring your current denture so both options can be checked.
- 1 You need more adhesive than you used to.
- 2 The denture clicks, rocks or drops when you talk.
- 3 Sore spots keep coming back.
- 4 Your face looks more sunken around the mouth.
- 5 The teeth look worn flat or chipped.

When a denture is not your only option
You may come in expecting dentures and leave with a different plan. Depending on your teeth, choices can include:
- saving strong teeth with fillings, crowns or root canals, and replacing only the missing teeth with a partial
- a bridge for a short gap
- dental implants for one tooth, several teeth or a full arch
You get the facts on each, and the choice stays yours.

Choosing how your new teeth look
A denture should suit your face, not just fill a space. Before a denture is finished, you can usually see the tooth shade, shape and length, and you can ask for changes.
If you also want to brighten or reshape the natural teeth next to a partial, Omni Dental offers cosmetic dentistry such as whitening and bonding. Planning both together helps the shades match.

Switching dentists from Palatine with an old denture
Many people look for a new dentist when an old denture stops fitting. You do not need records from your last office to book, but they help.
Bring these to your first visit:
- your current denture, even if it is loose or cracked
- recent X-rays or notes from your previous dentist, if you have them
- a list of the medicines you take
- your dental insurance card
Dr. Poles checks the denture and your gums together, then explains whether a reline, a repair or a new denture makes more sense.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How many times can dentures be relined?
There is no fixed number. A denture can be relined as long as the base and teeth are in good shape and the reline restores a good fit. Once the teeth are worn flat, the base is cracked or relines stop helping, a new denture usually serves you better.
How long after extractions do I get my final dentures?
Gums usually need a few months to heal and settle after teeth are removed. If you wear an immediate denture during that time, it is relined or replaced once the gums are stable. Dr. Poles checks your healing at follow-up visits and tells you when your mouth is ready.
Will dentures change the way I talk?
They can at first, especially with sounds like s and f. Most people adapt within a few weeks as the tongue and cheeks get used to the new shape. If your speech still sounds off after that, the denture may need an adjustment to its fit or tooth position.
What can I eat the first week with immediate dentures?
Stick to soft, cool or lukewarm foods such as yogurt, eggs, soup, mashed vegetables and fish. Avoid hard, sticky and very hot foods while your gums heal. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions, including how long to keep the denture in at first.
Can you fix a denture that keeps rubbing?
A denture that rubs usually has a pressure point that can be adjusted. Do not try to file or reshape it yourself, because that can ruin the fit. Bring it to your visit and Dr. Poles will look at where it presses and what change it needs.
