Which type of denture fits you?
The right denture depends on how many teeth you have left and how steady you need it to be. Here is a quick comparison:
| Type | Suits you if | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full denture | No teeth remain in that arch | Held by suction and fit, so lower ones can move |
| Partial denture | Some healthy teeth remain | Clasps on nearby teeth hold it in place |
| Implant-supported denture | You want a steadier fit | Needs enough bone and an implant procedure |
| Immediate denture | Teeth are being removed and Dr. Poles finds it suits you | Needs adjusting as the gums shrink |
Dr. Poles explains each option in plain terms and shows you what he sees on your X-rays.

Signs it may be time to talk about dentures
You do not need to wait until every tooth is gone. These are common reasons people ask about dentures:
- Several loose, broken or painful teeth that would be hard to save one by one.
- Trouble chewing that is changing what you eat.
- Missing teeth that make you hide your smile.
- An old denture that rocks, rubs or makes sore spots.
A full exam of your oral health tells you which teeth can be kept and which cannot.

Dentures or dental implants: what are the downsides of each?
Both have trade-offs, and knowing them up front makes the choice easier:
- Dentures cost less to start and need no surgery. They can move, especially on the lower jaw, and need relines as your gums change.
- Implants feel steadier and keep the jawbone in use. They need surgery, several months of healing, enough bone and good general health.
Many people choose the middle path, a denture that snaps onto implants. If you are weighing fixed teeth instead, see our page on implant options for Schaumburg patients.

Planning dentures from Schaumburg: how many trips?
A new denture usually takes several visits over a few weeks. Expect an exam and X-rays, impressions and bite records, a wax try-in, delivery, and one or more follow-up adjustments. If Dr. Poles suggests an immediate denture, expect extra healing checks after extractions.
From Schaumburg, Route 53 is a common way to reach our office at 305 E. Rand Road. We see patients Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM, so you can plan each visit around work.

Your first weeks with new dentures
New dentures feel strange at first, and that is normal. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chew on both sides at once, and read aloud to help your speech settle.
If a spot rubs, call us instead of putting up with it, because a small adjustment usually helps. Your dentist will give you care instructions for your own denture.

Questions worth asking at your consultation
Go in with a short list so you leave with clear answers:
- Which of my teeth can be saved, and which cannot?
- Would a partial, a full denture or an implant denture suit me, and why?
- How many visits will it take, and what will I wear in the meantime?
- What will follow-up adjustments look like?

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do not see your question? Call us and we will talk it through.
Call (847) 483-8833How long do dentures last?
Dentures do not last forever. Your gums and jawbone slowly change shape and the teeth wear down, so most dentures need a reline or replacing over time. Signs it is time include looseness, sore spots, clicking or trouble chewing that was not there before.
Should I sleep in my dentures?
Most dentists suggest taking dentures out at night so your gums can rest and the denture can soak clean. Sleeping in them every night can irritate the tissue. Dr. Poles may suggest a different routine in some cases, such as just after extractions.
Will I need denture adhesive?
A well-fitting upper denture often stays in by suction alone, while lower dentures move more easily. A small amount of adhesive can add confidence, but needing more and more of it is a sign the fit has changed. Implants are another way to keep a lower denture steady.
Can I get dentures with Medicaid in Illinois?
Coverage rules vary by plan, and this page cannot tell you what yours includes. Bring your card to your visit and ask our front desk what your plan covers before any treatment starts, so you know your share up front.
Can I get a denture if I still have some teeth?
Yes. A partial denture works alongside your natural teeth, using them for support. If some remaining teeth are weak, Dr. Poles will explain whether they are worth keeping or whether a full denture would serve you better over time.
Does dental insurance cover dentures?
Many dental plans include some benefit for dentures, though limits and waiting periods vary. Omni Dental accepts most major plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental and MetLife. Check your own benefits with your plan before treatment starts.
